Four Questions to Ask When Setting Your Next Goal


Beneath anything we want to accomplish is something we want to feel. (Tweet it.)

Maybe we want to feel powerful or abundant. Inspired or alive. Expansive or free. Significant or impactful.

Think about a goal that you are pursuing right this very moment.

Why are you doing it? What are you hoping you’ll feel when you accomplish it? Who do you hope you’ll become in the process?

(There’s no right or wrong answer here.)

As Danielle Laporte says, “Everything we do is driven by the desire to feel a certain way. Everything. You’re not chasing the goal itself, you’re chasing the feelings that you hope attaining that goal will give you.”

It took me several projects and a number of years to really get this. I’d cross the finish line of a project feeling exhausted, burnt out, and unclear on how I got there. Unclear on why I did all that work in the first place.

This was because I hadn’t considered how I wanted to feel in my life and creative process. I had only focused on the end result.

When considering any goal or ambition, I ask myself four questions to make sure it’s a worthwhile pursuit with the right strategy in place. They are:

  1. What is my goal?
  2. Why do I want to do this?
  3. How do I want to feel in the pursuit of my goal?
  4. And what can I do to feel that way?

For example...

My goal: I want to impact 10MM people in the first year of launching Choose Wonder Over Worry. (By May 2019)

Why: Because the cost of worry is our life. Our potential. Our creativity. Our self-expression. Our gifts. Our relationships. I know the pain of being disconnected from myself, my truth, and my power, and I know the suffering that comes along with listening to my fearful mind. (Did you know that 97% of what we worry about is not much more than an anxious mind spinning with drama and misperceptions?) THIS PAINS ME, and I want to create a container of wonder to talk about and face these parts of ourselves with courage, curiosity, and compassion.

How I want to feel in the pursuit: Present. Aligned. Connected to source. Useful. Energized. Like a Vessel for Expression. Willing. Open. Grateful.

What I can do to feel that way: Gather aligned communities to talk about these topics in inspired settings. Stay big picture and do what only I can do and delegate the rest. Blend action and connection time with “introvert recovery time,” as Kellee on Team Wonder calls it. Anchor my work in personal practices and self-care. Look for opportunities to take the message to a larger, more global audience through media and content. Look for opportunities to get in front of 500-10,000 people at one event. Remind myself WHY I’m doing this when I get overwhelmed or stuck or afraid.
